Buyer’s Guide to Sweetheart Neckline Dresses & Accessories

14 Feb Buyer’s Guide to Sweetheart Neckline Dresses & Accessories

One of the most popular neckline styles on gowns is the sweetheart neckline. Dresses of all styles and sizes have this neckline design, which is typically adorned with sequins or rhinestones. The design can be described of being doubly scalloped to resemble the top part of a heart that accentuates the bosom.

Who looks great in a sweetheart neckline?

As with all parts of a dress, the type of neckline you wear depends on your body type. The collarbone, neck, and upper chest are all alluring parts of the body. The good thing about the sweetheart style is that it looks good on most girls – especially if you are petite or not well endowed. It can create an illusion of curves.

If you have an especially long neck or large bust, this style might not be ideal for you. It’s best to stick with high necks dress styles.

Buying a Sweetheart Neckline Outfit

If you are shopping for a dress for prom, homecoming, gala, wedding, or other special event, you have many gorgeous dresses to choose from by designers such as Angela and Alison. Visit one of the stores that carries their line to try on the dresses that draw your attention.

It’s extremely important to try on a dress with a sweetheart neckline before making the decision to buy it. While in the dressing room, lift your arms, bend over, twirl around, etc… in order to make sure the neckline stays in place. It should not be too tight or too loose. Many of them come with built-in bras.

Choosing the Overall Style

There is a lot more to a dress than the neckline. There are also the sleeves, back, waist, bottom, and hem to consider. Do you want a single layer or multi-layer gown? Will your body type allow for you to wear a mermaid style dress or should you stick with an A-line or empire style? Do you want the waistline to be seamless or do you want it to be defined?

While many contemporary sweetheart neckline dresses are strapless, there are still some sleeve styles available if you want to cover part of your collarbone and/or shoulders:

  • ¾ sleeves
  • Capped sleeves
  • Thin straps
  • Thick straps
  • Off-the shoulder sleeves

Some of the sleeves are see-through lace. The backs of sweetheart bodice dresses are usually open, although it’s not uncommon to see the backs covered with a layer of see-through fabric or lace.

Accessorizing

This neckline is rather versatile, so there are a number of ways you can accessorize the dress. One lovely piece of jewelry that looks great with sweetheart necklines is a Y-shaped necklace with a single gemstone that complements the colour of the dress. However, keep in mind that if your bodice is heavily beaded, you might want to avoid flashy necklaces and glitzy earrings.

If your neckline has is covered with a layer of lace, a pearl or crystal necklace will give the outfit a lovely touch.

It’s best to start shopping for Sweetheart neckline dresses and accessories at least three or four months before the special event so that you will have time to make any alterations or changes.
